NSBE’S HISTORY
Founding
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1975 at Purdue University by six visionary students—Edward A. Coleman, Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan Jr., and George A. Smith—known as the “Chicago Six.” Their mission was to address the severe underrepresentation of Black students in engineering and to build a national network that would support, retain, and graduate Black engineers.
Growth & Expansion
NSBE’s first National Annual Meeting took place in April 1975, bringing together 135 students from 28 schools. The organization expanded rapidly, launching its Pre‑Collegiate Initiative (PCI) in 1988 to prepare future generations of Black engineers—reaching students as early as kindergarten. Programs like SEEK (Summer Engineering Experience for Kids) provide free, hands‑on STEM learning opportunities across the country.
NSBE also became an international organization in 1975, establishing its first global chapter at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. Today, NSBE includes 600+ U.S. chapters and 700+ international chapters, connecting thousands of members with top companies such as Apple, Google, NASA, Lockheed Martin, Toyota, and more through its renowned career fairs and conferences.
Mission & Vision
NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
With over 10,000 members, NSBE continues to expand its influence—working toward a future where engineering is a familiar and accessible path in communities of color, and where Black students achieve parity in entering and thriving within STEM fields.
Cultural Legacy
Leadership is at the core of NSBE’s culture. The organization empowers members to lead, innovate, and create change within the engineering profession. NSBE alumni have made significant contributions across industries—one notable example being Marillyn Hewson, former CEO of Lockheed Martin and a proud NSBE alumna.
From its founding by the Chicago Six to its global presence today, NSBE continues to shape the engineering landscape and open doors for generations of Black innovators.
